Digital Camera Settings - Canon XTI
Hi Gary ...
I recently purchased the Canon XTI and my first intro to DSLR's. Coming from a film world - 35mm as well as MF - well, quite a change. I just read your article "Exposure issues with the digital SLR" and kept saying to myself how so spot-on your remarks were and so I thought that if you had a few minutes that you might help me on some parameters.
I'm a bit of a fanatic on skin tones. I use Portra NC 160 or 400 with my Pentax 645N camera with great success. Would you have any suggestions to reproduce - as closely as possible - faithful skin tones?
Thank you,
Ray

Your article on digital exposure issues
Gary, Hi. Apologies for contacting you with a dumb amateur question - I'll quite understand if you don't enter into this sort of correspondence.
I am trying to understand your explanation of using partial metering to reduce the blown highlights in the example image on your site. http://www.garywhite-photography.com/section41011_3472.html
I can see how f8 or f11 reduces the exposure by to stops but can't work out why taking a partial meter reading from the brickwork would not work in the opposite direction, increasing the over exposure of the highlights. Where is my thinking wrong on this?
Just bought a 5D and as you will tell from my question, I have a lot to learn. So thanks from me for putting up stuff like this on your site even if you do not have the time to reply.
Great pics in the galleries. What do you use to create your web galleries?

Camera purchase query
Hi Gary, My son David sent me your website, which I have viewed with interest. As a person who wishes to develop his photograhy from a beginner to some where decent I need to upgrade my camera from Konica 4.0 megapixels to a reasonably priced Canon SLR. What would you advise?
Thanks for your time & best rgds.

Digital Exposure
Thanks very much for the informative article. I find the limitations of dynamics in this format frustrating and half decided to invest in a lightmeter again having unfortunately sold Starlight when switching to digital. I reckon I'll go for a Seconic this time.
Your details of the exposure range were just what I was looking for.
I would very much like to see the difference between an image taken with a 5D and same image taken with a 1DsMk11. Is it possible that you could send me a couple of files to compare, preferably RAW. I think maybe the 1Ds has better tonal range but would like to check that before spending so much money.
Regards
Paul

Dear Gary
I have just had the pleasure of browsing your work and I must say I am highly impressed with your work. In fact I wanted to visit some of the countries you have shot in.
I also enjoyed the straight forward aspect of your site.
I am a fledgling photographer in Sydney seeking to expand further into the wedding photography.
Stay Well

input on wide angle
For starters, your site, your WORK is outstanding. I've just returned from a portraiture workshop with Andrea Modica at Anderson Ranch in CO (highly recommend it) so as a painter merging into photographic work (which I always did) I find myself caught up with decision making on lenses. After a frustrating wedding shoot - too many people, I vowed I'd go for a wide angle but, have a Canon eos 10D so no EFS lens for me. There seems to be Tokina 12-24mm and the L 17-40 you wrote about. Your thoughts? My own website doesn't show any photo work (yet) but for now, feel free to take a peek www.carolefishback.com. I'm bookmarking your site - inspiring! I envy your ability to travel. My last trip was to Prague and loved the scenery - too bad I didn't have this camera then.
